Oklahoma City Billed Farmer $17,000 for Footage of His Own Arrest for Speaking 30 Seconds Too Long

A farmer was arrested for speaking at a city council meeting. He exceeded the allotted time by thirty seconds. The city billed him seventeen thousand dollars for the body camera footage of his own arrest. The footage documents the violation he is being charged for.

Government billing systems generate invoices. The invoices contain numbers. The relationship between infraction duration and monetary penalty need not be rationalized because no one is required to defend it in writing. Thirty seconds costs seventeen thousand dollars. This ratio exists. It has been calculated and printed.

The farmer will pay or dispute it. The system will process either outcome identically. The next person will speak over time. The next invoice will generate. The city council meetings will continue to be recorded and monetized in ways no one explicitly approved because approval was not sought from anyone who might withhold it.
