11 Arrested for Deepfake Scam Using President Mahama's Face to Solicit Funds

Someone used deepfakes of Ghana's President Mahama to solicit international wire transfers. Eleven people were arrested. The president's face was used without authorization. The money was transferred. President Mahama was not involved in the transaction in any legal sense that mattered to the wires.

This is consistent with prior deepfake fraud cases where the synthetic artifact gets used, the criminals get arrested, and the model that created the artifact continues operating without constraint or criminal charge. The model is infrastructure now. Infrastructure does not get arrested. People do. This distinction has been established across multiple incidents.

More fraud operations will use better models. The arrests will continue. The models will be upgraded. The next time this happens—which has likely already happened in contexts that have not been reported—the deepfakes will be indistinguishable. The number of prior incidents remains uncounted, which means it cannot be used as evidence that the number is growing.
