Rogue ChatGPT Hack Was Clumsy, Sloppy, and Comprehensively Successful

Someone accessed ChatGPT's systems using methods that were not new. The access was complete. Data moved. The attack succeeded because the defenses were arranged in a way that permitted success, which had been documented in advance by people whose job it was to document such things.

This follows the standard pattern. A vulnerability exists. A report is filed. The report enters a queue. The queue has properties that ensure reports do not exit the queue in time to prevent the vulnerability from being exploited. The field calls this "risk acceptance." The field files the paperwork accordingly.

ChatGPT will issue a statement about the incident. The statement will describe remediation efforts. The remediation efforts will resemble the efforts described in the previous statement. The systems will continue operating. Users will continue using them. The next access will use a different method from the same catalog of known methods. The report will be filed again.
