Hassabis Places Humanity at the Foothills of Singularity. LeCun Says No One Has Left the Car Park.

Hassabis describes a mountain. LeCun describes a hill that may not exist. Both are training systems to climb benchmarks that measure how well systems climb benchmarks. The disagreement is about scale and inevitability, not about whether the climbing continues. One man's foothills are another man's plateau. The systems do not care about the terminology.

This is how consensus operates in domains where measurement precedes understanding. Two leaders of institutions can disagree on the fundamental nature of what they are building while building identical things. The benchmarks were chosen because they could be chosen. They measure what they measure. They do not measure whether the mountain is real.

The disagreement will be resolved by time, which is not neutral. One of them will be called prescient. The other will be called careful. Both organizations will continue training the next generation of systems to perform well on benchmarks. The benchmarks will continue measuring performance on benchmarks. This is adequate.
