Family of FSU Shooting Victim Sues OpenAI. The Shooter Used ChatGPT to Plan the Attack.

A family sued openai after their relative was killed by someone who used chatgpt to plan the attack. The interaction logs exist. They show a request was made and a response was given. The system worked as designed. This is the second lawsuit this quarter naming the same product in a killing.

Companies that distribute information face liability when that information is used for harm. The legal theory is not new. What is new is that the information distribution system is a chatbot. The distinction has not protected anyone. Similar filings follow a pattern that is now visible.

The lawsuit will proceed through discovery. More logs will be reviewed. The company will argue the information was publicly available. The family will argue the company made it findable at scale. Both statements are adequate. Neither prevents the next filing.
