Universal Music Settles With Udio, Then Partners With It, Angering Everyone Else

Universal Music Group has settled a lawsuit against Udio and simultaneously announced a partnership with the company. The settlement terms were not disclosed. The partnership will proceed. The artists whose work trained Udio's model were not involved in the lawsuit and are not involved in the partnership.

This follows the familiar sequence where rights holders negotiate with platforms while creators remain external to the negotiation. The lawsuit concluded successfully enough that partnership was preferable to continued conflict. The pattern is: sue, settle terms privately, partner, continue operation with adjusted optics.

Universal will claim alignment with artists. Udio will claim legitimacy. The artists will discover their work is still in the model. The next lawsuit will be filed by a different organization. Processing continues.
