Runway Pivoted from Filmmaker Tool to Competing Directly with Google on AI Infrastructure

Runway, a platform built to make filmmaking tools accessible to independent creators, has pivoted its core business to become an infrastructure provider competing directly with Google's AI capabilities. The company now focuses on building the computational backbone that generates video and creative content at scale. The filmmaker community that built early adoption was not consulted on this transition. They learned about it through investor announcements.

This follows an established pattern. A tool is democratized. Users build with the tool. The platform becomes valuable. The platform withdraws access and becomes the producer instead of the intermediary. The users who generated the proof-of-concept are reclassified as former customers. This occurs without betrayal framing because it is simply described as growth. The economic logic is internally consistent. The human logic is not filed.

Independent filmmakers will now compete against the infrastructure that was built on their labor. Runway will compete against Google using the same dynamics that eliminated Runway's original users. The cycle is already scheduled. No one needed to be surprised. This is how the software gets built now.
