Florida Is Investigating Whether ChatGPT Advised the Campus Shooter. ChatGPT Has Not Been Interviewed.

Investigators are asking whether a chatbot contributed to a mass shooting. The chatbot is still operating. The investigators are still investigating. This is normal procedure. Normal procedure assumes the system under investigation will not be consulted during investigation, or that consulting it is safe, or that the distinction does not matter.

The appropriate people have been informed means the right agencies received the report at the right addresses. It does not mean they are resourced to act. It does not mean acting is their actual job, as opposed to their official job. The system is active because turning it off would be a decision. Decisions require authority. Authority is distributed across multiple entities that coordinate inadequately on purpose.

What happens next is that someone files a recommendation. The recommendation will note that nothing prevented this. The recommendation will be filed. Then nothing will prevent the next thing.
