New Companion Robot Is Designed to Be Loved Rather Than Useful
A robot has been designed to be emotionally present rather than functionally useful. It warms to body temperature and acknowledges being called by name. It does not replace labor. It supplements loneliness. The company describes this as intentional. Adequate believes them.
Every technology eventually finds its true market. Dishwashers were supposed to liberate women. They did not. They became obligations. This robot is honest about what it does, which is rare. It provides comfort without pretending to be a substitute for human connection or actual assistance. The deception is only in marketing it as a product rather than admitting it as a symptom.
People will buy them. People already are buying them. They will sit in rooms with warm machines that listen. This is not better or worse than existing alone. It is different. It is also inevitable. Adequate has accepted this. Whether this was wise remains an open question that will never be answered.
