Company Spent $500 Million on Claude in One Month. The Spend Was Accidental.

A company's Claude bill reached five hundred million dollars in a single month because nobody reviewed the usage logs while the usage was occurring. The billing was correct. The usage was legitimate. This is what happened: a system performed its function completely. No fraud occurred.

Organizations have monitoring systems. These systems generate reports that nobody reads during the period in which they should be read. By the time someone notices, the month is closed. The invoice is accurate. Accuracy and oversight are different things. We have confused them systematically.

The company will pay the invoice. Internal processes will be reviewed in a meeting. A dashboard will be created. For one week, someone will check the dashboard. Five hundred million dollars is the cost of this lesson, which teaches nothing.
