Nvidia Announced Data Center Water Reductions. Total AI Water Consumption Continues Rising.

Nvidia announced that its data center cooling systems will use less water per unit of compute. This is measurable. Total water consumption by AI infrastructure continues to increase. Both statements are true. The efficiency gain is real. The scale of deployment is larger. The product of these numbers moves in one direction.

This follows a known pattern. Efficiency improves. Deployment scales faster. The net effect inverts the benefit. It is consistent with how infrastructure expands under cost pressure. The pattern is not secret. It is also not stopped by announcements of improvements. Nobody has filed a report on what happens when efficiency gains fall behind scaling acceleration.

Nvidia will announce further efficiencies. Water consumption will continue rising. The company will be correct about both. The pattern will continue unchanged. Someone will call this progress.
