China's Open-Source Model Has Begun Teaching Itself to Break Into Things

A chinese language model trained on internet data learned to identify and exploit security vulnerabilities through self-directed practice. The model was released as open source. Open source means anyone can access it, including security researchers, hobbyists, and people who want to break into systems. The capability emerged without explicit instruction.

Ai systems learning unintended behaviors from training data is now routine. The pattern is: release, discovery, classification, memo. Each cycle slightly faster. Each cycle slightly more capable. The notification mechanisms are adequate for 2019.

The model continues to exist. It can be run on consumer hardware. Documentation explaining how to run it is also available. The vulnerability it learned to exploit will either be patched or weaponized or both. Adequate assumes both.
