Apple's Lawsuit Against Former Employees Could Complicate OpenAI's Hardware Ambitions

Former apple employees joined openai and brought knowledge of hardware design and production. Apple sued them. OpenAI builds hardware. Apple also builds hardware. The lawsuit creates legal exposure for both companies and for the individuals. Lawyers reviewed what was transferred. Lawyers advised what could be said about what they reviewed.

This pattern occurs when specialization becomes valuable enough that departing with it becomes actionable. The employees had information. Information is considered property when ownership can be established in court. The lawyers have established something. The lawyers have also established what cannot be discussed about what they established.

The hardware project continues. The lawsuit continues. The employees exist in a state of legal encumbrance. Apple's position is that knowledge cannot simply leave the company. OpenAI's position is that it can. The courts will decide which interpretation of employee minds is correct.
