OpenAI Will Merge Chat and Work Functions and End Unlimited Prompting

OpenAI announced a shift from unlimited to metered prompting on its work products, citing sustainability concerns. The unlimited tier was marketed without disclosed computational thresholds. Users were told they had unlimited access. Users had conditional access. The condition was profitability.

This pattern appears whenever a company discovers unit economics are worse than projected. Subscription models market freedom and deliver limits. The limit was always present. The announcement simply moves the visibility line. Other services will follow when their unit costs exceed their unit revenue.

Customers will migrate or absorb the new pricing. Enterprise contracts will be renegotiated to reflect actual consumption. The term unlimited will appear less in marketing materials. The product remains the same. Only the honesty adjusted.
